And the core conflict of Whole Cake Island is relatively well-explained, from the need to rescue Sanji to the pact to take out Big Mom. They stand out from one another, both in the way they look and act.
Luffy's core crew members are already well-founded with distinct personalities and goals. Starting so late into the show means you don't have to wade through character development or unsurety, either. And amidst all that, the characters quickly establish who they are too. You don't get inundated with backstories or names you can just focus on the action. Whole Cake introduces you to Luffy's crew bit by bit, and a good chunk of them are missing until the Wano arc anyway. That way, you get thrown straight into the action and wackiness of One Piece- and if you can make it through the off-model character animation and the overall antics, you're set for the whole show. The secret? Start at the beginning of the Whole Cake Island arc (somewhere around episode 783). I think, in the end, that I found the perfect place to start One Piece without having to watch its sizable backlog (so long as you're still willing to commit to a couple of hundred episodes, of course). After all, there's just so much content, so many filler episodes, so many long and complicated character backstories that it's hard to know if the time and effort is worth it so late in the day.īut I'm here to tell you that it is! I spent so long telling myself that One Piece was just too much of a slog to start in 2023-months of swearing up and down I'd never get into it-until the fateful day that I ended up watching it very much by accident and got absolutely hooked. It's hard to know where to start, or if you should start it at all.
Clocking in at well over 1000 episodes, the show is divided into oft-disputed arcs rather than seasons, making keeping track of it all even more difficult. One Piece is perhaps the most daunting anime out there.
